As we all know, true innovation isn’t immediately recognizable at a glance. The main purpose of these inventions is to make mechanical watches more practical.
Over the years, Germany has led the way in patent applications across Europe. According to the latest annual report of the European Patent Office, in 2017, German companies have applied for more than 25,000 patents. Of course, the number of patent applications alone is not enough to measure the innovation of a company. The key factor is whether the invention can bring about real technological development.
All patents filed by Ferdinand Adolph Lange comply with this principle. He founded the first Saxon watchmaking company in 1845, hoping to make a top watch in his hometown. After the reconstruction of factory in 1990, he again enriched the field of precision watchmaking with many major inventions.
The Innovations from Saxon Watchmaking Company
Zero return device (2000)
In 1997, brand introduced an advanced and sophisticated self-winding movement–Sax-0-Mat calibre with built-in zeroing device. When the crown is pulled up and the second hand returns to zero instantly.
Accurate jump scoreboard (2001)
The dial was originally installed on first chronograph movement L951.1 for the Datograph. And now Double Split and Triple Split models are equipped with this device.
Separate tooth unit (2005)
With a sophisticated split-toothed device, the Lange Double Split, Triple Split and other chronographs prevent amplitude loss during segmented timing.
Stop-second device for the tourbillon (2008)
After more than 200 years of invention of the tourbillon, Lange realized how to stop the vibrating balance in the rotating tourbillon frame, so that the tourbillon watch can also accurately design time.
This patented device is mounted on Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar, 1815 Tourbillon and Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon.

Constant power escapement(2010)
The system on all Zeitwerk models is located between the barrel and the balance wheel, which is responsible for adjusting the operation of the digital dial to advance one frame at a time.
Jump word device (2011)
The Zeitwerk model features an accurate hopping device that delivers an unambiguous, clear design.
Translucent dial coating (2013)
Expert is on a sapphire crystal glass dial with a translucent material that allows UV light to pass through that can thus glow for hours in the dark.
Track Moon Phase Display (2014)
Richard Lange Perpetual Calendar “Terraluna” is equipped with this patent. The moon phase display accurately tracks the lunar orbit of the moon on the 29th, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 3 seconds. After 1058, the deviation of the day appears.
Delayed digital conversion (2015)
To ensure the smooth functioning of the complex movements in the Zeitwerk Minute Repeater, the engineers installed sophisticated safety devices.
